How to Add Metallic Texture to Painted Walls

There are many ways to put a metallic texture on your walls. Some are decorator-level in terms of difficulty and require some in-depth knowledge of acrylic paint and faux techniques. However, you can do a basic metallic texture at home by using regular artist's acrylic paints available at art stores. The metallic paints are quite rich in tone, and blending them with a stiff gel medium provides the texture to the finish. The acrylic paints are suitable for interior latex-painted walls, which are typical for home interiors. If you choose to use this technique on a wall that was painted with oil-based paint, you must apply a primer first, because acrylic does not adhere well to the slicker oil surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Put 2 tablespoons of metallic paint on your mixing surface, and create a test mixture.

    • 2

Add gel medium, about 1/4 teaspoon at a time, until the mixture is the density of the texture you want. Be careful not to add too much gel, or you will dilute the metallic effect. If you want a more subtle look, the diluted mixture may be suitable, however. It is a matter of taste. There are no adhesion issues with the larger amounts of gel. Keep track of the proportions of gel and metallic paint used to create the desired mixture.

Apply the test mixture to the wall. It should be stiff enough to adhere without dripping. Use the palette knife to apply a swath of the mixture. Use the brush for a subtler, flatter finish. Manipulate the surface with the brush if you want a more varied surface.

Mix a larger volume of metallic texture paint if you are satisfied with the proportions. Apply the same way you applied the test mixture. If your portions are not satisfactory, adjust the mixture and apply another test. The paint can easily be removed immediately with the palette knife and a wet rag if you aren't satisfied with a spot.
