Put 2 tablespoons of metallic paint on your mixing surface, and create a test mixture.
Add gel medium, about 1/4 teaspoon at a time, until the mixture is the density of the texture you want. Be careful not to add too much gel, or you will dilute the metallic effect. If you want a more subtle look, the diluted mixture may be suitable, however. It is a matter of taste. There are no adhesion issues with the larger amounts of gel. Keep track of the proportions of gel and metallic paint used to create the desired mixture.
Apply the test mixture to the wall. It should be stiff enough to adhere without dripping. Use the palette knife to apply a swath of the mixture. Use the brush for a subtler, flatter finish. Manipulate the surface with the brush if you want a more varied surface.
Mix a larger volume of metallic texture paint if you are satisfied with the proportions. Apply the same way you applied the test mixture. If your portions are not satisfactory, adjust the mixture and apply another test. The paint can easily be removed immediately with the palette knife and a wet rag if you aren't satisfied with a spot.
