How to Make Delft Tiles

Although many people identify Delft blue ceramics with the Netherlands, they were actually a Chinese concept, adopted by Dutch potters in the city of Delft in the 17th century. Delft blue themes include windmills, tulips and other flowers and various portrayals of Dutch scenery. Delft blue is easily identified by its creamy white background and cobalt blue patterns. Delft tiles, originally used as flooring in the 1600s, add a charming accent to a Dutch-themed kitchen.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the tiles with rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth to remove grease or other residue.

    • 2

Use a clean paintbrush to apply the primer to the tiles. Allow the primer to dry completely.

    • 3

Tape the stencil to the tile. Dip a clean, dry paintbrush into the paint and dab the excess on a paper towel. Use short strokes to stipple the paint in the area of the tile inside the stencil. Allow the paint to dry before adding another layer.

    • 4

Remove the stencil slowly when the paint is completely dry. Use a utility knife to lightly scrape away any unwanted paint.

    • 5

Lay the tiles in an area where they won’t be disturbed and allow them to cure for 21 days.

    • 6

Apply a coat of water-based urethane to the delft tiles, allow it to dry completely and apply a second coat.
