How to Paint Formica for a Metal Look

Rich, metallic tones can pull together a room with a hint of sophistication. Copper can create a warm environment in a drab kitchen. The look of stainless steel can give a bathroom a pristine and modern look. Copper, steel and other metals are somewhat expensive, but a faux finish can give you the look you desire for a fraction of the cost. Formica counter and table tops can be painted to look like metal. The process is fairly simple and can be completed over a weekend.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Surface

    • 1

Clean the surface with a household cleanser. Remove all dirt and oil from the entire surface. Rinse well and repeat if needed. Dry with a clean towel.

    • 2

Sand the surface with 150-grit sandpaper. Lightly scuff the finish so the paint will adhere to the formica. Remove the dust with a damp cloth and allow the surface to dry completely.

    • 3

Apply a coat of 100 percent acrylic primer with a paint roller with a 1/8 to 1/4 inch nap. Allow to dry for one to two hours and apply a second coat. Allow to dry for 12 hours before applying paint.

    Paint the Formica

    • 4

Paint the surface the desired color. Select a spray paint designed for use on plastics. These paints are available in a variety of metallic tones. Apply in a sweeping motion to avoid runs and overspray. Allow to dry for one hour.

    • 5

Lightly sand any runs or uneven areas with 150-grit sandpaper and use a damp cloth to remove the dust. Dry with a clean towel.

    • 6

Apply a second coat with light sweeping motions and allow to dry. You are now ready to apply a faux finish or clear acrylic.

    Apply an Aged Copper Finish

    • 7

Apply a finish that mimics an aged copper. Prepare the surface and apply two coats of a copper-colored paint. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.

    • 8

Rub green craft paint across the surface with a paper towel. You should have a light green tint on the surface. Do not apply too much color.

    • 9

Rub raw umber craft paint on the surface with an old sock. Apply the color in a few random areas but do not apply too much color. Try to give it a natural appearance.

    Seal the Surface

    • 10

Seal the surface with clear acrylic. Select a satin or semi-gloss acrylic sealer and apply with a paint roller with a 1/8 to 1/4 inch nap. Allow to dry for one to two hours.

    • 11

Apply a second coat of clear acrylic and allow to dry for one to two hours. Apply an additional coat, if desired.

    • 12

Allow the finish to cure. It will take two to three weeks for the paint to cure. During this time, the painted formica should not be cleaned with anything other than a damp cloth. After the paint has cured, the surface can be cleaned with mild cleansers. Never use a scrubber or scouring powder on painted formica.
