Tape off around the surface to be painted with low-tack painter's tape. Apply primer by cutting in around the edges with a brush and rolling out the rest with a foam roller. Allow the primer to dry completely.
Apply the white paint, using an angled brush for the edges and filling in with the roller. Brush out any drips or lap marks for a smooth surface. Paint the surface with two coats of paint, letting the paint dry between coats.
Mix a white glaze of one part matte medium, one part water and a dash of white acrylic paint. Create a light gray glaze from one part matte medium, one part water and acrylic paint in white, black and raw umber.
Apply the white glaze to the surface with a wide brush. Use broad, quick brush strokes. Add the gray glaze to random areas. Blend and soften the two glazes by dabbing with a bunched-up rag. Allow the glaze to dry.
Grip a long, thin sign painter's brush, using your thumb and forefinger. Apply thin, wavy veins, using the gray glaze. Slowly move the brush diagonally. Pivot your wrist slightly to create natural fluctuations. Continue adding parallel veins, allowing some lines to run together and overlap in places. Add a few veins that run in the opposite diagonal direction. Dab the surface with a soft rag to soften and lighten the veining.
