How to Make a Fake Stone Wall

Stone walls can be extremely expensive to incorporate in your home decor. However, the look of stone walls can be mimicked with paint and faux finishing techniques. Faux stone walls is a three step process that can be very time consuming. Fortunately, making a faux stone wall can be done relatively easily. All it takes is a little practice and a lot of paint.

Drop Cloth
Painter's Tape
Primer
Faux Textured Stone Paint
Paint Roller and Tray
Texture Trowel
Faux Glaze
Cheesecloth

Instructions

  Prepare the surface for painting. Wash the wall with water and soap. Remove all traces of dirt and debris. Allow the wall to dry completely. If the existing paint is glossy, rub off the gloss with sandpaper or gloss remover. Cover furniture and floors with a drop cloth. Tape off doors, windows and crown molding with painter's tape.

  Prime the wall. Priming will ensure an even and smooth surface to paint on. Allow primer to dry completely.

  Apply the textured stone paint using a roller. Stay in a 3 foot by 3 foot area and work in a random pattern. Some areas should have more paint than others. Paint the entire wall in 3 by 3 foot squares.

  Use the texture trowel to apply texture to the wall by smoothing and pressing. Smooth random areas by pressing the trowel to the wall and lightly dragging it against the wall. Lightly press random areas by pressing the trowel to the wall and quickly lifting the trowel away from the wall. Randomly press and smooth the entire wall until it resembles a stone wall.

  Apply the faux glaze randomly using a roller. Work in 3 foot by 3 foot areas. While the glaze is still wet, use a cheesecloth to gently rub off and smooth away excess while glaze is still wet. Continue working in 3 by 3 foot areas to apply glaze with paint roller and remove with cheesecloth.

  Allow wall to dry completely.
