How to Paint Your Own Antique Copper Folding Screens

Folding screens are a beautiful and decorative way to add style and panache to a space, while dividing rooms and defining spaces. Antique copper is a beautiful choice for a folding screen, but it is somewhat expensive and can be hard to come by. The good news is, you can give any folding screen the look of antique copper by following a few short steps.

Folding screen (metal or plastic)
Drop cloth
Fine grain sandpaper
Spray primer
Antique copper spray paint

  Clean your folding screen. Metal folding screens work best for creating the look of antique copper, but plastic screens can be used as well. If you've chosen a metal screen, use your sandpaper to lightly sand the entire surface of the screen.

  Lay your screen on a drop cloth. Hold your spray primer can six to eight inches from the surface of the screen and use a sweeping motion to prime the entire surface. Allow the primer to dry and turn the screen over to repeat the process on the other side.

  Hold the copper spray paint can six to eight inches from the folding screen and use a sweeping motion to paint the entire surface. Allow the first coat to dry and repeat the process to apply a second coat.

  Flip the screen over and repeat Step 3 on the opposite side. Allow paint to dry and remove the screen from the drop cloth. Examine the surface and use the remaining paint in the can to touch up any missed spots. Allow the paint to dry and stand back to admire your piece.
