Textured Wallpaper Moulding Styles

Despite its name, wallpaper isn't relegated to simple two-dimensional paper options. Many wallpaper manufacturers and suppliers offer textured wallpaper, some of which isn't composed entirely of paper. Often, the molding styles of these wallpapers mimic other sorts of wall coverings, providing a cheaper alternative that is easier to install.
  1. Faux Textures

    • Faux textures---made from both natural and synthetic materials---lend a subtle, three-dimensionally textured aspect to all sorts of wallpapers. One common faux texture technique mimics thick wall paint, giving the paper a "brushed" surface that represents the strokes of a paintbrush. These types generally come in solid colors accented with the highlights of the "brushstrokes." Similarly, some faux textures provide a simple "grain" molding reminiscent of a wood surface. Other faux textures mimic fabric, such as burlap or even denim. Popular wallpaper patterns---like floral, stripes or paisley designs---often come in faux texture form, with the pattern having a slightly raised quality. Some designer wallpaper lines offer crumpled metal faux textures, which resemble something akin to wrinkled tin foil. These varied faux texture papers come in a full spectrum of colors and are installed like standard wallpaper, with the use of wet paste. Maintenance depends on the material of the paper's construction.

    Special Effects Vinyls

    • Special effects vinyls add a three-dimensional vinyl surface to wallpaper. Generally, this finish is made of expanded vinyl and mimics the look of small ceramic tiles---such as the kind often used on kitchen and bathroom walls---or brick surfaces. This vinyl molding features a glossy, reflective sheen or a dull finish, relative to the tiles or bricks it strives to recreate. Special effects vinyl wallpaper comes in a wide variety of colors; some are solid single colors while the brick patterns realistically mimic the aged and fired look of brick. The tile patterns often feature a few different matching tile colors on one roll to create a pattern. Like other wallpaper types, users install special effects vinyls using wet paste to hang it on the wall. Once hung, it can be scrubbed with soap and water for cleaning.

    Paintables

    • Paintable wallpaper, as its name suggests, is wallpaper with a raised molded surface that is meant to be painted over. The three-dimensional surfaces of these wallpapers---often made from paper with a vinyl additive coating---often resemble common wallpaper patterns, such as stripes, blocks, floral imagery, crackled surfaces or floral designs. Once installed via paste, strips of this textured wallpaper form a matching pattern sequence. Paintables are installed with paste like other wallpaper types. These papers come in white, and can be painted any color with wall paint.
