Instructions

    • 1

Find a picture or sample of granite that you want to mimic on your kitchen countertop. Go to a home improvement store and obtain matching paint. This will include a base color and secondary colors.

    • 2

Thoroughly clean the surface of the countertop to remove any dirt and residue. Wet a clean cloth with vinegar and then wipe down the countertop. This will help to adhere the paint to the countertop.

    • 3

Apply an oil based primer to the countertop with a paint brush or roller. Wait at least four hours for the primer to dry.

    • 4

Apply the base color you want for the faux granite to the countertop with a clean roller or paint brush.

    • 5

Pour the secondary colors onto a plate. Use a separate plate for each color.

    • 6

Cut a sponge into small pieces with the scissors. Wet the piece of sponge to get it damp and then dip it into the first secondary color to apply to the countertop. Press the sponge gently onto the surface of the countertop.

    • 7

Press the sponge over different areas of the countertop and re-dip the sponge every five times. Use a new piece of sponge and apply a different secondary color to the countertop.

    • 8

Wait at least six hours for the paint to dry. Apply three coats of polyurethane to the countertop with the roller. Wait at least one hour in-between each coat.
