How to Make Wood Look Old

It is easy to buy new wood at a lumberyard or home center. It is not so easy to find wood that will match older-looking rooms. You can hire a carpenter to make new wooden beams or a piece of furniture fit in with your existing décor, but it will cost you a small fortune. You can distress the wood yourself with objects you have around the house and a few different paints and finishes.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the wood down on a flat work surface. The space should be big enough that you can work freely.

    • 2

Start gouging areas on the wood with the scraper and screwdriver. Do not go farther than ¾ inch deep.

    • 3

Put on safety glasses or other eye protection. Lay small metal items such as nails and screws on the face of the wood. Hammer the objects down on the wood, trying not to let the pointed ends go into the wood. When the wood is nicely gouged, remove the metal objects.

    • 4

Apply the sandpaper or sander on the gouged and distressed areas of the wood. You do not have to be gentle doing this. You are sanding the wood to remove the newness, and make it look old and worn. Vacuum the wood to clean off any loose residue.

    • 5

Paint the wood with black glossy paint. Paint a small area at a time, and do not cover the entire piece. Just brush on the paint, allow it to soak in, and before it is dry, wipe it off with a damp sponge. Then rub it with a dry rag. Repeat this process until the entire surface of the wood has been treated.

Apply the finish you chose. Make sure that paint is dry before you apply the finish.
