How to Secure a Brick Veneer if the Wall Is Already Built

Home exterior siding comes in many types, including masonry brick veneer. This type of siding uses full bricks laid and attached to the existing exterior walls. Instructions

    • 1

Dig down to the foundation of the exterior wall with the shovel, if it is not already exposed. Run the stud finder along the walls and mark stud locations with a pencil.

    • 2

Lay the L-shaped flashing on the ledge of the foundation. Secure the top of the flashing to the exterior wall with nails, using the nail gun.

    • 3

Apply roofing cement to the top edge of the flashing to cover the seam. Use a putty knife or a piece of wood to spread the roofing cement. Lay the felt paper on the wall and secure it with the staple gun.

    • 4

Place one end of the chalk line, over a stud, at the bottom of the wall. Run the other end of the chalk line to the top of the wall. Snap a chalk line every 16 inches to mark the studs along the wall.

    • 5

Apply mortar to the top of the flashing on the foundation with the trowel. Apply mortar to the bottom of the each brick and set them in place. Insert a weep-hole tube between the joint of every third brick to allow water to drain.

    • 6

Secure masonry ties to every other stud with the nail gun. Alternate the placement of the masonry ties every three or four rows of brick. Bend the ties over the brick when applying the mortar. Continue this process until you have finished the wall.
