How to Paint a False Lattice With Masking Tape

Plain white walls can look sleek and simple, but not everyone wants such a plain design. Consider painting one or more walls with a false lattice design using two distinct colors. A lattice is a cross-hatched design, usually white, that resembles a lattice trellis used in outdoor design. False lattice looks best on a wall in a sunroom or family room. It adds a country-style design that brings the design of the exterior of your home to the interior rooms of the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your wall in the color you have chosen for your lattice work. If your walls are already the color of the desired lattice, you don't need to repaint. After painting, let the walls dry completely before moving on.

    • 2

Apply painter's masking tape to the wall by tapping gently on the tape to make it stick. Start at the top of the wall and apply the tape at a 45-degree angle from the floor. Apply each line of masking tape in the same direction. Measure the distance between each line of masking tape at the top and bottom of each line to ensure that the lines are the same distance from each other.

    • 3

Lay out new masking tape lines. This time start at the opposite corner at the top of the wall applying the masking tape at a 45-degree angle in the opposite directions of the previous lines. This will create a lattice, cross-hatching design. Apply the masking tape directly over the other lines. Measure these lines so they are the same distance apart throughout.

    • 4

Gently paint over the masking tape with a paint roller, taking care not to get paint underneath the tape. Use the paint color you have chosen for the rest of your wall. Let the paint dry completely with the masking tape still in place.

    • 5

Slowly pull the masking tape away from the wall, starting at the top left corner of the wall. Since the masking tape is in layers, pull several overlapping lines at once to make tape removal easier. Throw away the masking tape once all tape is removed. You're left with a false lattice design on your wall, created with paint and painter's masking tape.
