How to Install Faux Rock on a Fireplace

Fireplaces constructed of brick or another type of facade can be updated by adding faux rock. Using faux rock is cheaper and much lighter than natural stone, which makes it easier to install on the fireplace. However, if you do not want to buy or use faux rocks, you can make them yourself from household materials. Once finished, they can be applied to the fireplace surround or facade to change its appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the existing surround or facade with a tape measure. Make a mark on the wall with a pencil to indicate where the faux rocks will be located.

    • 2

Place strips of painter's tape on the wall to mark the dimensions or area for the faux rock. Apply white primer to the inside of the painter's tape with the roller.

    • 3

Fold and crinkle standard aluminum foil into the shape of rocks. The top of the foil should be round and the back needs to be flat to make contact with the wall.

    • 4

Cover the foil you shaped with heavy-duty foil to provide a smooth texture for the faux rocks.

    • 5

Apply construction adhesive or silicone caulk to the back of the foil and place the faux rock on the wall. Wait at least 24 hours for the adhesive or caulk to dry.

    • 6

Add a small amount of base color for the faux rock to the drywall compound. The paint will tint the color of the drywall compound. Mix the paint with the drywall compound in a small bucket and add one tube of acrylic latex caulk.

    • 7

Brush the mixture on the foil rock with the paintbrush. Wait at least five to 10 minutes for the first coat to dry. Add three to four coats to the foil to create a rock-like appearance.

    • 8

Apply the paint to the faux rock with the paintbrush. Wipe down the faux rock with a damp cloth to bring out the texture.

    • 9

Mix the paint for the color of the grout to stucco in the small bucket and then add one tube of acrylic caulk.

    • 10

Push the disc out of the bottom of the tube of caulk with a rod, through the end of the tube. Add the stucco mix to the tube and replace the disc. Apply the stucco mix between each faux rock to mimic the look of grout.
