How do I Bend Crown Moulding Around an Inside Curve?

Crown moulding is decorative trim placed around the top of walls to make the room more aesthetically appealing. Most rooms have flat walls, where straight pieces of trim can be easily installed. A room with curved walls creates a problem installing straight trim. The easiest solution is to bypass the curved portion; however, this seldom looks good. The better solution is to bend the trim to fit the curve of the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Steam the moulding in the steam box for 2 hours. The wood needs to be steamed for 1 hour per 1/2 of thickness, so 2 hours will soften most crown moulding. If the moulding still isn't flexible, leave it in the steam box for another hour.

    • 2

Lay out the shape of the curve of the wall using pegs on the peg board.

    • 3

Remove the moulding from the steam box using the gloves for protection.

    • 4

Place a strip of cork board on either side of the moulding to make a cork-moulding-cork sandwich.

    • 5

Place the moulding-cork sandwich up against the center pegs on the peg board, and on the outside of the curve. The textured side of the moulding should be toward the center of the circle.

    • 6

Place a peg behind the moulding-cork sandwich to hold it in place.

    • 7

Work your way around the curve placing a peg behind the wood sandwich to hold it against the curve of pegs.

    • 8

Allow the moulding to dry for 48 hours.
