Measure the length of the walls where you desire to install your faux crown molding. Purchase an amount of trim molding that's equivalent to the measurement of the length times two. For example, if the length of the walls is 30 feet, purchase 60 feet of molding. Purchase at least one extra piece of molding in case of error.
Measure down from the ceiling anywhere from 3 to 12 inches, depending on your preference, along the area of intended molding. Mark the measurement with painter's tape.
Paint the space between the ceiling and the strip of painter's tape in a color of your choosing and allow to dry thoroughly. Paint the trim molding the same color and set aside to dry.
Remove the painter's tape and install the trim molding along the wall, just below the ceiling. Start in the center of the wall and hammer trim nails through the molding and into the wall. Place nails approximately 24 inches apart until you've secured the entire piece. If the molding doesn't reach the corner, trim molding from a second piece to reach the desired length. Miter cut the pieces to fit together or butt them up against each other and secure into place with nails.
Measure the distance from the center of the molding to the corner. Miter cut a piece of the remaining molding to secure into the corner. Continue with your existing nail pattern (every 24 inches). Repeat this at every corner until your entire desired space is complete.
Repeat this entire process along the bottom of the paint line. You will have trim molding along the ceiling and just below the paint line, giving the appearance of solid crown molding.
Fill any nail holes and the corner seam where miters meet with wood filler or a caulk gun. Use wood filler or caulk that matches your paint choice or be prepared to touch up filled areas with a paintbrush.
