Disadvantages of Silestone

Silestone is a naturally occurring quartz material mixed with plastic that is frequently used in countertops and other surfaces because of its durability, aesthetically pleasing appearance and scratch-resistance. Since it is available in multiple colors, it can be tailored to most kitchen styles and is also water-resistant, making it safe to use around sinks. However, silestone has several disadvantages when compared to other counter surfaces.
  1. High Cost

    • Silestone is one of the most expensive countertops on the market because of the amount of stone material that is used to make it. Therefore, silestone isn't cost effective if you do not have a preference for its appearance. Wooden counters or various laminates are almost guaranteed to cost less, but they will likely require more maintenance. Granite sometimes costs more than silestone and sometimes less, depending on the specific type and where you buy it.

    Appearance Consistency

    • Silestone is fairly uniform in its appearance, which proponents of granite don't prefer. Granite has a number of different waves and patterns of colors dispersed naturally through the material that make each granite countertop different from others. Silestone looks more processed. One piece of silestone looks like any other piece aside from the coloring, which is an issue for people who want more aesthetic variety.

    Limited Color Choices

    • While there are various color options for silestone, they are more limited than what is available in other materials, such as granite or laminate. If you have a very specific color in mind for your kitchen or bathroom counters, you are more likely to get your exact shade with a different surface. Silestone likely has a color in the same general category as what you want, but it is much more generic and thus leaves less room for customization.
