How to Spray Clear Gloss Lacquer on a Kitchen Countertop

When working with spray substances, everything anywhere near your designated spray area is fair game. In one fell swoop you can have lacquer all over your refrigerator, cabinets and floor. Cover all surfaces, except the countertop you wish to spray, with newspaper or a tarp to prevent the spray lacquer from reaching them.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic tarp
  • Newspaper
  • Plastic garbage bags
  • Roll of painter's tape
  • Gloves
  • Old clothes
  • Cardboard
  • Spay lacquer gloss (a few cans, depending on the size of your countertop)

Instructions

    • 1

Ventiliate the kitchen by opening all windows so the lacquer fumes will have a way to dissipate.

    • 2

Place plastic tarps or newspaper on the floor, sink, stove, refrigerator and any other area you do not plan to apply the lacquer. Tape them down with painters tape. Do not use a canvas painter's drop cloth because lacquer can seep through cloth material.

    • 3

Put on gloves and old clothes.

    • 4

Read the instructions on the lacquer spray can. Spray some lacquer onto a piece of cardboard to get a feel for flow and the distance of the spray.

    • 5

Spray slowly, but do not concentrate too much lacquer in one spot. Keep the spray even and keep your arm moving in a flowing rhythm until you cover the entire area you planned to lacquer.
