How to Paint With Tuscan Bronze

You can create rich, warm color washes on the walls of your home using Tuscan bronze glaze. The layering of colors means the hue on the wall will vary in depth, resulting in a metallic bronze luster reminiscent of Tuscan tile roofs lit by a late afternoon sun. The method works best when you use a bright base coat color, such as a yellow or cream. You will achieve the best results if you complete the glaze portion of the painting in one afternoon.

  • Tuscan bronze glaze
  • Painter's tape

Instructions

  1. Painting

    • 1

Prepare the walls for the base coat. Tape all molding and trim and remove any cobwebs. Clean any dirt or stains from the walls.

    • 2

Apply the first coat of the base color. Use a 2-inch brush to paint around the ceiling and any woodwork. Use a paint roller to cover large portions of the wall.

    • 3

Wait four to six hours, then apply a second coat of the base color. Allow it to fully dry before moving to the next step.

    Glazing

    • 4

Prepare the glaze per the instructions on the can. Mix thoroughly, so the pigment is evenly distributed.

    • 5

Dip a 3-inch brush into enough glaze to cover the tips of the bristles. Brush the glaze onto the wall in an "X" shape, approximately 6 inches in width. Continue painting the same "X" shape in a random pattern, overlapping the edge of one "X" with another.

    • 6

Keep the glaze moist as you work by misting the wall with water from a spray bottle.

    • 7

Finish an entire wall, then dampen a clean, lint-free rag. Blot the glaze with the rag to blend the brush strokes and soften the effect. Spray the glaze with water if it's too dry to be blended. Dab some areas more than others to keep a random look to the glaze pattern.
