How to Use a Faux Sea Sponge Roller

A sea sponge roller is a more efficient and easy way to get a faux finish effect without having to sponge-paint an entire room by hand. The roller adds texture to the wall, hiding any imperfections that might exist in the paint or or on the wall. You can accomplish a more professional look by mixing paint colors and using the roller to add dimension to the paint itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a tarp or old sheet on the floor. Place a paint tray on top of the tarp near the area that will be painted. Fill the tray about halfway with the paint.

    • 2

Insert the sponge onto the roller handle. Load it with paint by dipping it into the tray. Roll it forward and back, covering the sponge completely with paint. It might require two to three rolls before the roller is completely covered.

    • 3

Roll the paint onto the wall. Start at the bottom and roll the roller upward, applying pressure to the roller as it moves. Roll up and down, overlapping the paint strokes. The texture will be applied to the wall as the roller moves. Reload the roller as needed.

    • 4

Move the roller in diagonal lines after the initial paint is on the wall, overlapping all of the strokes. Quickly put the paint on the wall to avoid any drips.
