How to Put a Glaze on a Base Coat

A glaze is a type of clear varnish added to the top of a previously painted object. Most glazes are tinted to give the painted object a slightly different color appearance. One of the techniques that uses glaze the most is an antiquing look. A dark color is mixed with the glaze, which absorbs in the grooves of the cabinets, making them look aged. A glaze protects the surface of the wood and helps prevent chipping.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the surface with a semi-gloss paint for best results. Glaze will not paint as well over a flat paint.

    • 2

Mix the paint and the glaze to create a tinted glaze that you can paint over furniture, walls and any other painted object. Mix the paint with a ratio of four parts glaze to one part paint.

    • 3

Test the glaze on a piece of poster board to determine how translucent the glaze is. Adjust the amount of paint or glaze until you have the consistency and translucency that you want for the glaze.

    • 4

Paint the glaze onto the object. Work in small sections. Glaze will dry completely within 20 minutes, so it is important to work fast. If you want to add texturing to the glaze, do so before the glaze dries over the paint.
