Look at the area where you want to hang the birdhouse to determine what colors will look best. The base coat will show through the cracks in the paint, so choose paints that coordinate with the surroundings.
Paint your birdhouse with a base coat of latex or acrylic paint. Allow it to dry.
Pour about 1/2 cup white school glue into a small plastic container.
Dip a clean paintbrush into the white glue and begin brushing a layer of glue onto the birdhouse. Work quickly; do not allow the glue to dry before going on to the next step.
Paint a layer of the top coat of paint directly onto the wet glue. Cover the entire birdhouse with the paint.
Allow the birdhouse to dry completely. It will start to crackle as it dries.
Paint the entire birdhouse with another layer of white glue. This seals the antique finish and gives it a glossy look.
