How to Paint on Plastic Faucets

Painting plastic does not seem difficult; so many people attempt to do the job with paint meant for other types of materials or surfaces. Since plastic is typically very smooth, cleaning, sanding and priming will prepare the paint to adhere to the plastic. The paint of your plastic faucet will come into frequent contact with water, soap and other things that could cause the paint to peel, making these preparatory steps the most important of the job.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the faucet with dish soap and warm water. Dry completely with clean, lint-free rags. Dirt or leftover water will prevent the paint from adhering to the plastic.

    • 2

Sand the faucet with your 120 to 200-grit sandpaper. Sand firmly until the shine is removed from the plastic. If the plastic surface is too smooth, the paint will not adhere.

    • 3

Paint plastic primer on the faucet with your paintbrushes. Cover the entire surface and let dry completely for a minimum of 45 minutes.

    • 4

Paint your colored paint on your faucet. Paint the first coat in light, even strokes.

    • 5

Let the first coat dry. Paint as many coats as needed to achieve desired look.
