Clean the mantel with a damp rag and warm, soapy water. Remove all stubborn residue using a scrubby brush. Wipe dry with a clean towel.
Sand the entire mantel lightly using a medium-block sanding block. Remove all dust created from sanding with a damp sponge. Sand in the direction of wood grain.
Paint the entire mantel with black bonding primer. Use a 2-inch paint brush or a mini-roller. Dab black paint into any small crevices the paintbrush or roller can't reach. Cover the entire surface. Allow to dry.
Paint the mantel bronze with metallic paint. Roll on the paint in all different directions; do not simply apply in vertical or horizontal strokes. If using a paintbrush, stroke the paint using a random pattern. Allow the first layer to dry about two to four hours. Understand that several layers of metallic paint are often needed. Depending on the brand of paint, up to four coats may be required for a solid, opaque look. Continue to add paint until you are satisfied with the results.
Wipe on antiquing glaze for additional depth and dimension. Mix together 1 part clear glaze and 1 part black latex paint. Stir will. Lightly brush onto the mantel. Wipe the glaze off the mantel. The remaining glaze will fall into decorative trim and edges of the mantel.
