Tung oil is used as a varnish, since it turns to a solid when it comes in contact with the air. Tung oil is difficult to use, and you must prepare the surface properly before you apply it After each layer of tung oil, you must sand the oil varnish and then wait two to three days before you apply the next coat. Tung also needs six or seven coats, but the quality of the finish gets better with age. Preparation of the surface is the key to applying tung oil.

     Wipe the surface of the wood down with a good white spirit to degrease the surface.

     Sand the surface of the wood using an 80 grit piece of sandpaper to remove most of the varnish already on the wood.

     Sand using finer grit sandpaper until you reach 220 grit sandpaper and the surface is free of any varnish.

     Wipe the surface down with a clean rag to remove any dust.
