Sand down the surface of your chest with medium sandpaper to remove any old paint and create a smooth and fresh canvas to paint. Always sand in the direction your wood grain is pointing. Wipe surface with a damp rag after sanding to remove sand residue.
Paint a light stain on the chest, painting in the direction of your wood grain, and allow stain to dry for 24 hours.
Apply painter's tape over borders and trim on the chest. These areas will be painted in your second color.
Paint the base of your chest in the first color you selected. Use a wide painter's brush to paint the large areas and use a small 1-inch brush to paint the areas around borders and trim. Allow this paint to dry for two hours; then paint another layer and allow to dry overnight.
Remove tape from borders and trim. Use a 1-inch brush to slowly and carefully paint the borders and trim in the second color you selected. If any paint splatters onto the base of the chest, wipe it away promptly with a damp washcloth. Allow paint to dry and paint on one more layer, and then allow to dry overnight.
Paint the entire chest with a clear finish of your choosing to preserve the paint. You can do a glossy finish for shine or do a matte finish to keep it flat. Allow finish to dry overnight before using your chest.
