How to Make Striping

Learning a couple of striping techniques can add depth to your design expertise. Striping is a technique that involves paint to different colors or different shades of a color in a striped pattern on a surface. Stripes give you an extra option when choosing a texture to add to a room's wall. Striping can be done by anyone that wants to make a room stand out. Horizontal and vertical stripes can be done, but vertical stripes are used more.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the wall that you are going to stripe with a base color. This will usually be one of the colors of the stripes. Let the base coat dry at least 48 hours before taping.

    • 2

Choose the width of the stripes. Stripes are usually between 4 inches and 12 inches wide, these stripes will be 6 inches. Measure 6 inches from one of the corners and mark with the pencil. Continue to measure and mark every 6 inches for the wall you are going to stripe.

Use the laser level at the first marking to make a level line from the floor to the ceiling. Mark this line at 6 inch intervals with the pencil. Peel the painter's tape and stick one end of the tape to outside of the line of markings, starting at the top. Work your way down, sticking the tape along the line until a piece of tape extends from the ceiling to the floor. Use the laser level to make sure the tape is straight. Repeat this step for the next set of markings, 6 inches apart.

Paint the area inside the tape with the second color. Alternate between painting the area between the tape the second color and leaving the base color uncovered. You should have one second color stripe followed by one base color stripe. Let dry for 48 hours and remove the painter's tape from the wall.
