How to Glaze Walls & Cabinets

A glaze is a translucent color painted onto a wall, cabinet or other surface to either make an interesting pattern or texture, or to replicate the look of another material, such as stone or wood. In its simplest form, you can apply it at home without special training, using materials you can obtain at a good paint store, home outlet or similar retail establishment. Using regular painting tools (like a roller and paintbrush), create a dynamic effect that will impress your guests and make your walls or cabinets stand out.

Things You'll Need

  • Satin finish paint (white or off-white preferred)
  • 2-inch paintbrush (angled)
  • Roller, tray and sleeve
  • Tint
  • Glazing liquid (water based)
  • Container for mixing
  • Mixing stick
  • 4-inch brush or cheesecloth (for textured effects)

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your base coat with the satin paint. This provides a solid base for the translucent glaze. Roll the walls. Use the 2-inch brush for corners and edges. Brush on cabinets for best results. You may roll on large swaths of cabinets if you want, but for a nicer result, run the brush over the just-rolled paint.

    • 2

Mix your glaze. Use a 4 to 1 ratio of glazing liquid to tint. Stir the glaze thoroughly.

    • 3

Roll on the glaze. Use the 2-inch brush to reach corners or edges. You may leave the simple glaze as is or proceed to create a textured glaze.

    • 4

Use the cheesecloth, bunched up, to lift off wet glaze. As an alternative, you may brush about the wet glaze, using the 4-inch brush, in diverse patterns. It's a good plan to work with a partner here, so you can manipulate the glaze while it is moist.
