How to Antique Green Painted Furniture to Cream

Painting a green piece of furniture cream can be a challenge, especially if you're trying to cover over the green completely with such a light color. To get a more antique-style look from your piece, add a crackle medium to your furniture and give it the appearance that the cream paint is old and cracking, allowing the green to show through from underneath. Use the same technique to antique any other items in your home, including doors, cabinets, walls and other furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the furniture piece to a well-ventilated area inside your home or outside. Spread a drop cloth under the piece, if desired, to protect your floor area from drips or spills. Take any drawer pulls or handles off of the furniture before you begin if you don't want them painted over.

    • 2

Wash over the surface of the existing green paint using a mild cleanser and a sponge to remove any dirt or debris. Wipe down the piece with a dry cloth to remove any moisture from the surface of the furniture. Let it dry completely.

    • 3

Mix together the two parts of your crackle medium in an old bowl or bucket following the directions on the packaging if your crackle isn't premixed. Pour premade crackle mixture into your bucket or bowl just before you are ready to apply it.

    • 4

Paint on the crackle mixture over the green paint using a paintbrush working in parallel brush strokes. Cover the entire surface of your furniture so all of the green has crackle medium over it. Leave the medium to dry for the time stated in the package directions.

    • 5

Apply your cream-colored paint over the crackle medium, working in strokes that are perpendicular to how you applied the crackle. Allow the paint to dry for 2 to 4 hours before moving the furniture back into place. The crackle will be activated as the paint dries, giving the furniture an antique look.
