How to Faux Flagstone a Floor

Flagstones are a beautiful way of decorating a floor. If you do not want to go through the expense and effort of installing real flagstones, you can create them yourself with a faux paint job. Painting the flagstones offers you absolute control over the size, shape, color and placement of both the flagstones and the grout between them. This project is not difficult but it is somewhat labor intensive. The finished result, however, is worth every second.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the floor you are going to paint thoroughly. If the floor is made of a porous material such as wood or cement, consider scrubbing it with a degreasing product to remove any oils or grease that may keep the paint from adhering.

    • 2

Purchase your paint. Select a product that is designed for the floor surface that you are painting. Wood and cement, for example, use very different kinds of paint.

    • 3

Choose five colors which will be: A main grout color, a darker shade for texture, a main stone color, a lighter highlight and darker shadow. You can used additional stone colors to create the appearance of flagstones made up of many kinds of stone.

    • 4

Paint the grout color onto the entire floor. A paint roller will be the easiest way to do this, though you can use a brush or paint sprayer if desired.

    • 5

Allow the grout color to dry.

    • 6

Sketch your flagstones onto the floor with a pencil. They can be rounded, irregular, rectangular or any other shape and pattern that you like. Leave space between the stones for the grout color to show through.

    • 7

Use a sea sponge to mottle the darker grout shade onto exposed areas between the flagstones. This will provide a more realistic, textured grout surface. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 8

Apply blue painter's tape to the grout areas between the flagstones. This will take some time, but it will ensure that the edges of the stones are sharp. You will need to cut and tear the tape to fit specific areas.

    • 9

Paint the main stone color onto the floor. If you want to use more than one color, paint all of the stones you plan to use in the first color before moving on to additional ones. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 10

Mottle or spray on the shadow color around the edges of the flagstones. This will make it look as though the edges recede into the grout, creating the illusion of three dimensions. For the appearance of older flagstones, lightly mottle the shadow color onto the entire stones to simulate pits and other imperfections. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 11

Apply a subtle highlight to the center of each flagstone to make it look like the highest point.

    • 12

Allow all of the paint to dry, then gently peel up the tape. Painter's tape is low tack, so it should not pull up any of the grout paint if you are careful.

    • 13

Seal the floor with a urethane or enamel sealant to protect your work.
