How to Use Stainless Steel Film

Stainless steel is a popular finish for kitchen appliances. If you replace some of your appliances with stainless steel versions but not others, you're left with appliances that don't match. It's a waste to replace a working appliance just because the color is different. One cost-effective solution is to make your appliances match using a stainless steel film product. This film is a lot like shelf paper but offered in larger pieces so that you can cover items such as a refrigerator with no seam lines. The only appliances you should not cover are ovens, since they get hot.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the front of your refrigerator with soap and water to remove all the grime. Use a scrubber and go around the edges and the handles. Rinse and dry with a towel.

    • 2

Spray the refrigerator with glass cleaner to remove materials left behind by the soap and water. Dry the surface with coffee filters.

    • 3

Mix white vinegar with water at a 50/50 ratio in a spritzer bottle. Spray the refrigerator a final time with the vinegar mixture and clean off any chemicals that remain. Dry with coffee filters because they are lint free. Your fridge should be smooth and spotless at this point.

    • 4

Turn the film toward the refrigerator and use the grid on the back to help you cut out enough film to cover your chosen area. Refrigerator-width film is sold in 26 3/4-inch widths and from 3- to 10-foot lengths. You can cover the front of a small refrigerator with a 6-foot section. Dishwasher-sized film is 17 3/4 inches wide in similar lengths. You can cover most dishwashers with a 3-foot section. If you are wrapping around a corner, make sure you allow extra film to reach the weatherstripping of the door plus at least 1 inch.

    • 5

Peel the top 1 inch of film from the backing paper. Attach the film carefully to the door surface. If you are wrapping the top edge of the door, peel 4 inches of film and start with enough excess above the top corner so you can wrap the top later. Line the top edge so that it is level and even with excess on both sides. Smooth the film from the center outward using a soft cloth.

    • 6

Peel a few more inches of backing paper once the top is started and smoothed. Continue smoothing down the face with the cloth. Always smooth from the center toward the sides. Remove bubbles by pricking the bubble with a pin to let the air out.

Fold the top edge back over the corner of the fridge. Place a sheet of white paper over the film and iron the film through the paper using the iron at a low setting. This will help the film adhere past the corner. Trim off the excess with a sharp utility knife. Fold the bottom edge over the bottom corner and iron. Trim and then fold your side edge over the side corner and iron. The film will set up completely over 24 hours.
