How to Paint Concrete to Look Like Tile Using a Stencil

Improve the appearance of plain concrete with simple stenciling techniques. Though you may have a plain concrete surface covering a porch or patio, you can still enhance it with paint to make it look like a designer surface. Instructions

    • 1

Spray the cement surface thoroughly with the power washer to remove dirt and grime.

    • 2

Mix one part muriatic acid to 10 parts water in the bucket. Scrub the cement surface with the muriatic acid and a scrub brush to clean it.

    • 3

Allow the cement to dry completely before painting.

    • 4

Apply a base "grout" color to the cement. Use a sash brush around the edges of the patio and fill in the center area with a paint roller. Allow the paint to set for 24 hours before proceeding.

    • 5

Prepare the stencil. Cut any border from around the edges of the stencil so that only the stencil pattern remains. This will make it easier to adjust the stencil to repeat the design.

    • 6

Mark off the center point of the cement area and draw lines to ensure proper stencil placement. Measure the dimensions of the area and mark the center. Draw a vertical and horizontal line through the center point to create four separate quadrants of the surface.

    • 7

Spray the backside of the stencil with the adhesive and affix it carefully to the cement. Place the stencil at the center point of the cement in one of the four quadrants.

    • 8

Fill in the stencil area with cement paint in the color you wish for your stenciled tile. Apply the paint with a 2-inch brush, making sure you apply the paint evenly into all openings of the stencil.

    • 9

Move the stencil and reapply it on the cement, making sure you position the stencil properly to continue the tiled pattern. Apply paint and then reposition the stencil again.

    • 10

Continue stenciling in one entire quadrant, then move back to the center and work on another quadrant.

    • 11

Allow the paint to dry for three to five days before allowing foot traffic.
