Instructions for Faux Leather Paint Finish

Faux leather painting is a technique that is not difficult to master. If you look at a real piece of leather, you will see that it is made up of several shades of tan and brown that are mottled together. This mottled appearance can be simulated with paints and stains, using cheesecloth to mottle the finishes. The result will be a very realistic leather finish that you will enjoy for years.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape off any surfaces that you do not want painted with low-tack painter's tape.

    • 2

Apply two coats of primer to the surface with a paint roller, allowing each coat to dry fully.

    • 3

Apply a cream-colored base paint with a roller. Allow it to dry for four to six hours, then apply a second coat. Let the base layer dry for 24 hours before continuing.

    • 4

Apply a dark brown paint with a paint roller. The application does not have to be perfectly smooth. In fact, it will look more organic if there are variations to the application. Work in small sections so you don't have to worry about the paint drying while you work.

    • 5

Wad up a piece of cheesecloth, and blot the wet paint, pulling portions of it away and creating a mottled appearance. You can also twist the cheesecloth a bit as you blot for more texture. As the cheesecloth fills with paint, discard it and wad up a fresh piece. Another texture option is to tap the wet paint with the end of a dry paintbrush.

    • 6

Complete the entire work surface, applying and blotting a small section at a time. Allow the textured paint to dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Apply a natural cherry stain over the surface with a chip brush or roller, again working in small sections. Lightly blot the stain with wadded cheesecloth to finish the texture. Once the stain is completely applied, allow it to dry for 24 hours.
