How to Paint a Picket Fence on the Walls

Picket fences suggest happy homes and small-town charm. You can include this iconic decorative element when designing a landscape mural for a room in your home. While you could paint each slat of wood by hand, using painter's tape is a much quicker approach to masking areas of the wall. One-coat paints will also save you time. If you are feeling inspired to create an intricate scene, you can also add houses, trees and people.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the lower part of the wall the color that you would like the picket fence to be. Use a brush to apply paint to the edges of the sides and the bottom of the wall. Roll out the rest of this section with a paint roller. Let this base color dry overnight. If you want the picket fence to be the same as your current wall color, you can skip this painting step.

    • 2

Measure along the baseboards with a measuring tape. Make chalk marks on the wall where you want each vertical picket of the fence to go. Make sure that these slats are spaced at even intervals. You may also wish to include posts for a more accurate fence design. The posts are wider than the pickets. You can paint a post in each corner of the room.

    • 3

Mark the height of the top of the fence along the side walls. Mark the height for the horizontal strips of wood, referred to as rails. A typical picket fence has rails along both the top and the bottom of the fence, securing the pickets.

Use a chalk line to snap lines for the top of the fence and each of the rails. Check the chalk lines to make sure they are level.

    • 5

Make a mark along the top of the fence where the top of each picket will be. These marks need to match up with the picket marks you made along the baseboards.

    • 6

Place strips of low-tack tape covering where you want the pickets of the fence to be. Place the tape on the wall in the shape you want for the pickets. Use tape in different widths to differentiate the pickets, rails and posts. Place a level along the sides of the pickets to see that they are perfectly vertical.

    • 7

Paint over the taped fence and the rest of the wall with a paint roller. Green is an appropriate paint color for an outdoor scene. Apply paint to areas along the trim, floor and ceiling with a brush.

Remove the tape to reveal the fence. Make any necessary touchups with a small brush.
