How to Splash Paint a Bedroom

Splash painting your bedroom is an uncomplicated way to change the look of the room. It is also called "splatter painting." This technique gives the walls a funky, multicolor appearance that matches the existing decor in the room. The splash painting adds texture and a casual ambiance to the bedroom. It is a creative way to allow neutral or solid-colored walls to coordinate with the existing bedding, draperies and other bedroom accessories. Since you only need a small amount of accent paint colors to accomplish this faux finish, it is an economical way to use leftover paint from other projects.

Drop cloth
Painter's or masking tape
Wall paint for the base coat
Cleaning cloths
Semigloss wall paint in one or more accent colors
Paintbrushes

Instructions

  Look at your walls, the bedding and other decor in the bedroom. Pick out accent colors in the room that you want to bring out and enhance with the splash painting technique. For instance, if the walls are an off-white and the bedding is a combination of white, pink and lime green flowers, you may want to splash lime green and pink paints on the wall. You can splash one shade or use two or more.

  Dust and clean the wall surface to make it dust-free and to remove any stains.

  Lay down a drop cloth before beginning to paint. Splash painting can be messy. Protect baseboards and ceiling areas with painter's or masking tape. Protect any other areas that paint may splash on with an old sheet or towel. Wipe off any paint splatters or drips as soon as they occur with a cleaning cloth.

  Paint the base coat on your bedroom walls. If you like the existing color, you can simply splash the accent colors on the walls and skip this step.

  Dip the bristles of your paintbrush into one of the accent colors. You will use only one color at a time and then allow it to dry.

  Stand approximately 1 to 2 feet from the wall area you are splattering. Flick the paintbrush toward the wall. The paint will splatter in a random pattern.

  Move on to the next section of the wall. Continue splashing the paint on the wall until all the walls have splatters. Step back from the wall to see if you need to add more splashes in certain areas. Allow the paint to dry completely.

  Repeat the method with the remaining accent paint colors. Allow each to dry before using another color.
