How to Add Color to Wood Stain

If you are constructing a piece of furniture out of wood or putting together a wood deck, it is helpful to seal and treat the wood with a wood stain. If you already have a can of stain but want to use a stain that is darker or a different color, you can change the color of your stain by adding a universal colorant.

Things You'll Need

  • Wood stain
  • Newspaper
  • Paint stirrer
  • Universal colorant
  • Stain sponge
  • Unfinished wood plank

      Open a can of wood stain and place it on a piece of newspaper.

      Place an unfinished wood board next to the container. You will use this board to test the stain as you add color to it.

      Paint a small amount of wood stain onto the board to identify the regular color of the stain.

      Pour one tbsp. of universal colorant into the stain, and mix the stain well with a paint stirrer. You can purchase universal colorant in a variety of colors at a hardware store.

      Paint a small amount of the stain onto the wood board next to the original stain. Continue adding colorant and testing the stain in this manner until you are satisfied with the color of the stain.
