How to Refinish Countertops to Look Like Granite

Granite kitchen countertops are a pricey addition to a home and feature a complicated installation process. With practice, you can master a faux paint treatment to replicate the look of granite for a small fraction of the cost of the real thing. Visiting a granite supplier and referring to color pictures of granite countertops will aid you in the painting process. To make the countertops durable, a lengthy drying process between coats of primer, paint and sealer is necessary.

  • Poster board
  • Acrylic paint in three colors
  • Three sea sponges
  • Small paintbrush
  • Painter's tape

      Practice painting a faux granite effect on the poster board by dipping a damp sea sponge into a small amount of acrylic paint and dabbing it on the poster board. Repeat with the other paints, using a damp sea sponge for each paint.

      Flick small spatters of paint on the faux granite surface from a small paintbrush that has been loaded with paint.

      Place painter's tape on all counter fixtures that will not be painted. Clean the counters well with soap and water, and dry them thoroughly.

      Paint the primer on the countertop, using a paintbrush, and it dry for 12 hours.

      Apply the faux granite paint treatment you practiced in Steps 1 and 2. Let it dry for two hours.

      Paint the acrylic sealer on the counter over the paint. Let it dry for 24 hours. Apply two more coats of sealer, waiting 24 hours between each coat.
