How to Make Concrete Floors Look Like a Tile Floor

Paint can be applied to a concrete floor to replicate the look of fine ceramic tile. Visit a tile store before beginning this painting project to get some ideas for the faux-tile colors and designs. This effective and attractive painting technique will also help eliminate dust from an untreated cement floor. Epoxy paint is used for this technique, and it can be found in variety of colors at paint stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the concrete floor thoroughly with soap and water and let it dry completely. Cover the concrete with a muriatic acid, using the supplies provided in the etching kit, to prevent the dried paint from peeling.

    • 2

To make the tile-shaped stamp, cut the foam sheet with the electric knife to fit inside the pizza box, making sure all edges of the cut sheet are straight and the corners have the desired shape.

    • 3

Paint the cement floor with the grout-colored epoxy paint, using the paint roller. Let the paint dry for 24 hours.

    • 4

Duct tape the end of the chalk line to a corner of the cement floor. Pull the line to establish a diagonal tile guide and duct tape the opposite end of the line to the floor. Snap the line to leave a chalk mark.

    • 5

Pour 1/3-cup each of three complimentary epoxy colors in the bottom of the open pizza box. Swirl the colors together lightly, but do not completely mix them.

    • 6

Dip the foam tile stamp in the paint. Press the stamp against the inside of the top of the open pizza box to remove excess paint. Stamp three to four images of the tile along the diagonal line on the cement floor. Repeat to create a diagonal row of tile shapes, leaving 1/4-inch of grout paint exposed between each tile.

    • 7

Follow the first row of tile shapes when stamping adjacent lines of tiles, staggering the ends of the "tiles" at the centers of the previously stamped rows. Take care to ensure consistent spacing between the tile shapes. Continue, until the entire floor has been stamped.

    • 8

Cut the foam stamp in half or in quarters to stamp half or quarter tiles if needed around the edges to complete the faux-tile floor.
