How to Paint Walls With Wax for a Plaster Look

Creating a faux plaster appearance with wax gives a room a new look. The art of painting with wax, also known as encaustic painting, allows a decorator the freedom to form and mold designs on the wall much like with plaster. As with plaster walls, the encaustic painting process allows for texture; but additionally it gives the option of color. Any lay decorator can achieve a wax painting project, but fancy designs may require the assistance of an artistically inclined person.

Instructions

    • 1

Melt beeswax in a baking pan over low heat. Melt the wax slowly so you don't burn or scorch it.

    • 2

Stir in pigment. When the wax is melted and thin, add powdered pigment and stir. Keep adding pigment until the wax is the desired color.

    • 3

Remove the pan from the heat. Wear a glove-style potholder so you don't burn your hands. Allow the wax to stiffen slightly.

    • 4

Apply the wax to the wall using a plaster trowel. Dip into the wax with the edge of the trowel and place the wax on the wall. Form the wax into the desired shape or texture.

    • 5

Reheat the wax as needed. When the wax begins to clump or harden, reapply heat until it is thin enough to work with.
