Kitchen Backsplash Ideas in Faux Rock

Faux rock or stone veneer is lightweight and easy to install, because it comes in panels. Because it's available in a number of styles, such as slate, granite, you can choose the look that you want in your kitchen. Faux-rock tiles, meanwhile, can be applied individually and used in a variety of looks, depending on your taste. Your finished look can range from natural and woodsy to warm and Mediterranean.
  1. Mix Materials

    • Combine faux stone with other materials, such as stucco or wood or brick veneer. Stucco most of your backsplash and use the faux stone veneer in focal-point areas, such as over the stove or the sink. Pair the stone with dark wood or brick for a rustic look. For a fresher country look, pair sandstone veneer with white beadboard.

    Add Funky Accents

    • For a funky alternative, glue bits of colored glass or shiny irregularly shaped beads between the faux stones. Make sure the faux-stone veneer is rough-looking so that the embedded glass or beads will look like tiny found objects. Treating your faux-stone panels this way adds an element of fun and surprise to your decor. The shiny objects are also a nice contrast to the stone.

    Combine Tiles

    • Pair two types of stone tiles. Use weathered-stone tiles with travertine or three-dimensional architectural tiles. Combine the two in a design of your choice. Alternatively, use faux-stone veneer to frame a painted-tile mural above a stove or sink. These tile murals are available at some home-improvement stores and can also be ordered online.

    Paint the Tiles

    • Paint the faux rock tiles. Use acrylic paint as is, or thin it with water or an acrylic glaze. Paint the tiles in one or more colors of your choosing, or add a design to the tiles. Give each tile its own design, or create a mural-like effect.
