How to Mask a Two-Toned Paint Job

If you have inherited a two-toned paint job you feel ambivalent about, you may be wondering how to mask it so that you can better enjoy your space. Painting over it is an option if you have the time and money, and will be living in the space long enough to justify the effort. For a short-term rental, decorating tricks can do the job. When you mask a two-toned paint job creatively, you might come up with a cool room design you wouldn't have thought of yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn your two-toned paint job into a faint background that sets off a wall of framed images. Hang the images so closely together that their sides are nearly touching. Tile the wall with art from just-above-seating-level almost to the ceiling and nobody will ever notice the paint job behind it.

Hang a wall of curtains. Install a curtain rod near the ceiling and suspend floor-length curtains from the rod. Curtains can make an excellent wall covering in any room; for example, they are a great backdrop behind a bed in lieu of a headboard and add a sculptural element to living rooms with little architectural interest.

Decorate the offending paint job with furniture and accessories. Hang a giant mirror above shelves that reach halfway up the wall. Place ceiling-height shelves on both sides of a ficus or palm tree. Wheel a freestanding clothing rack in front of the wall and let your wardrobe be the focus of the room. Place a folding screen against the wall, and arrange a cluster of seating around it. The wall will hardly be noticeable behind your design.
