How to Simulate Rustic Barnwood

The ingenuity of using what you have to create beautiful and usable decor items extends to frugal woodworking projects. Rustic furnishings are present in country, cabin, cottage and vintage decor styles, and weathered barnwood is an aged wood that provides a texture and color that fits all of these styles. If weathered barnwood is not available, simulate rustic barnwood by applying an inexpensive finish to scrap wood. The finish is comprised of ingredients you already have in your kitchen.

Steel wool
Ruler
2 jars with lids
White vinegar
Measuring cup
Craft stick
Tea bag
Raw, untreated wood
Paintbrush

Instructions

  Pull apart a 2-inch chunk of steel wool into small pieces. Place the pieces into a recycled food jar.

  Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Use a craft stick to completely submerge the steel wool pieces. Place the lid on the jar and allow it to soak overnight.

  Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water into another recycled food jar. Add a tea bag and allow it to steep for at least 15 minutes. Remove the tea bag and allow the tea to cool.

  Paint your raw, untreated wood with the brewed tea mixture. Allow the tea to dry.

  Paint over the tea stained wood with the steel wool and vinegar mixture. Within half an hour, your wood will have the appearance of old barnwood.
