How to Reglaze a Clawfoot Bathtub

If you've got a classic old clawfoot tub, and the glossy surface is long worn from it, you don't necessarily have to junk it. Porcelain tubs can be reglazed with special paint available at your refinishing supplier or online retailer. The process requires that the existing surface be chemically "etched" to remove any remaining gloss so the new gloss will stick.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Painter's tape
  • Tarps (plastic)
  • Masking tape
  • Synthetic paintbrush
  • Porcelain etching solution
  • Paint sprayer
  • Primer for porcelain
  • Topcoat for porcelain

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all non-porcelain parts of the tub that will come off, including the faucet and fixtures, using your wrench and screwdriver. Tape off any non-porcelain parts you can't remove.

    • 2

Lay out tarps on the floor and wall around the tub, taping them in place.

    • 3

Apply porcelain etching solution to the whole porcelain surface with a synthetic paintbrush. Let it set for 10 to 15 minutes (or according to the instructions on the packaging), until the gloss is gone from the surface. Rinse well.

    • 4

Fill your paint sprayer with primer for porcelain. Spray it on in a thin, light coat. Keep the spray gun moving at all times so there are no drips or ridges in the surface. Let it dry for four hours.

    • 5

Apply a second coat in the same manner as the first. Let it dry overnight.

    • 6

Refill the sprayer with topcoat for porcelain. Apply it in the same manner as the primer, in a thin, even coat. Let the topcoat dry for four hours.

    • 7

Apply a second coat of topcoat. Let it dry. Repeat, applying at least four coats, more if desired. Let the final coat set for 48 hours before reassembling the tub.
