Faux Bamboo Trim

Homemade Faux Bamboo

• Faux bamboo can be made from everyday items to trim children's projects. Wrap small pieces of yarn around a cardboard tube and paint the yarn with white glue. Space the yarn pieces at regular distances of 4 to 6 inches. Paint the entire tube with white glue. Cover the surface with tissue paper. Paint the tissue paper with white glue until the tube is covered. Paint the tube with tan, brown and green acrylic paints. Cut the tube to use the faux bamboo for trimming projects.

Faux Bamboo Sheets

• Faux bamboo trim is also sold in sheet form. This gives the appearance of half or quarter sticks of bamboo across a wide sheet. The sheet is actually cast and painted to look like real bamboo. You can cut the sheet to trim wall surfaces, benches, cabinet doors and any larger sheet application. The illusion can be further enhanced by using real bamboo at the corners.

Faux Wood Bamboo

• Wood can be turned on the lathe and shaped into bamboo form. After the wood is turned it can be cut down the middle or into quarters to be used in wood furniture projects. The faux bamboo trim is painted with the rest of the furniture and finished to hide the fact that the trim is actually wood and not bamboo. Faux trim is used because it is easier to cut, shape and handle when combined with other solid wood projects.

Plastic and Metal Bamboo

• In some conditions, support posts need to be very strong or durable. Metal posts and PVC pipes can be coated with joint compound, cement products and other texturing mixtures to create the appearance of bamboo. These items are often painted in place to create the appearance of bamboo and they may be mixed with real bamboo in nonstructural applications. Lashings are commonly used to enhance the illusion that all of the bamboo is real after the faux pieces have been painted.
