How to Decorate Scagliola Marble

Scagliola marble is a beautiful faux material that simulates the appearance and texture of true marble. By combining splintered colored materials with plaster and pigments, artisans create a marbled effect. It is applied to a hard surface. A time-intensive, detail-oriented polishing process follows, giving the surface the appearance of real marble. Because of this striking similarity, scagliola marble can be used in home decor much like true marble would be.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the style of scagliola marble you prefer. Colors include yellow or copper with black veins, pale pink, purple, teal, blue, green, and terra cotta. Some colors of scagliola marble can only be used inside, as they are not weather resistant.

Choose convent sienna, malachite, porphyry and granite for decorative inlays. Inlays are often found along the arms of fine wood furniture, on fireplace mantles and along window sills. Inlay materials are sometimes thinner than others and are unsuitable for other uses that require more durability.

Opt for verde antico, lapis lazuli, malachite and convent sienna for tabletop projects. These generally strong varieites of scagliola marble are good candidates for creating tops for end tables, nightstands and dining tables. Scagliola marble-crafted tabletops will last for years with the proper care and maintenance.

Select the yellow and black sienna, light siena, porphyry and lapis lazuli for interior columns. These materials are strong enough to support load-bearing walls when crafted into columns and pilasters. The range of colors allows several choices to decorate any style of room with scagliola marble.

    • 5

Pick out porto oro, verona rossa or crema marfil to use as wall coverings, decorative flooring and door surrounds. These strong varieties of scagliola marble can withstand high traffic and substantial handling, making them ideal for uses on floors and walls.

Treat scagliola marble like any other decorating medium once you have your project completed. Use the marble as a focal point in the room, choosing corresponding colors of accessories to accent it. Alternatively, you can choose to downplay the scagliola mable, selecting colors that are in the same color scheme to create a monochromatic palette.
