Painter's Tape That Will Not Destroy Wooden Floors When Removed

Painter's tape may leave an unpleasant surprise when removing. Tape may lift up the polyurethane sealer or paint from the floor. Avoid this tricky problem that is difficult to fix by following a few painter's tips.
  1. Test

    • Place a piece of painter's tape in an inconspicuous area, such as behind a door. Burnish the tape well and then remove it the following day. Watch to see if any paint or sealer removes when the paint is pulled up.

    Misconceptions

    • Look for tape that is specifically labeled painter's tape. Some tapes are colored blue, but are simply masking tape in disguise. A low-stick tape is best and should be labeled for specific use in paint projects.

    Additional Tips

    • When using stencils on wood floors, use spray adhesive instead of painter's tape to apply the design. Instead of taping off your floors with tape, place painter's plastic with a tape edging onto the edge of the baseboard. Spread the plastic down and onto the wood floor. Cover the floor with a drop cloth for total protection.
