Pros and Cons of Faux Backsplash

A faux backsplash is an innovative way to create a unique look in your kitchen or bathroom. Unlike tile or other stone, a faux backsplash is created using paint, plaster and other products to mimic stone. There are both drawbacks and benefits to using a faux backsplash. Understand both the pros and cons of installing a faux backsplash when deciding how to finish your home.
  1. Pro: Custom Color

    • A faux backsplash is customizable into any color. Latex paint comes in hundreds, even thousands, of colors. When creating the backsplash with paint, it is very simple to match up hues and tints with coordinating colors. Take items in the room such as samples of fabrics for curtains or of the flooring to precisely color-coordinate the latex paint.

    Pro: Expense

    • Paint, joint compound and even stencils are used to create a faux backsplash. These items are priced considerably less than traditional tile or stone when used to create a faux backsplash. Though less expensive, adding the layers of paint and plaster does take more time than a more expensive backsplash tile.

To create the look of tile, use painter's tape that is roughly 1/8" thick. Often car detailing or pin-striping tape is used. Place the tape on the wall where the backsplash grout line appears in a grid pattern. Joint compound, venetian plaster and other materials are then layered over the area. Additional art products, such as latex, metallic and even mica powders are used to mimic stone. Experiment with your walls on drywall board or poster board first to create the backsplash you are looking for. The cost of these materials is often considerably less than the cost of installing a stone backsplash.

    Con: Durability

    • No matter how many layers of sealer or paint, a painted backsplash is not as durable as stone or tile. You may need to add several layers of clear sealer over the faux backsplash. Yearly touchups may be required. Backsplash is often installed to protect the wall's surface and for easy cleaning. Your hand-painted or plastered surface may look beautiful but wear away quickly.

    Con: Professional Look

    • Unless you are a professional faux painter or artist, you should practice the technique several times before applying it directly to the wall. Use professional painter's tape for the small grout lines. Paint may bleed under the tape and give the appearance of an unprofessional paint job. Take time to touch up all paint bleeds.
