How to Substitute for Medium Brown Antiquing Gel

Antiquing gel is commonly used by artists and home decorators to give an antiqued appearance to furniture, cabinetry and other items. Medium brown antiquing gel is used frequently, as it creates more dramatic results than lighter brown antiquing gel, yet appears less intense than darker brown antiquing gel. If you are unable to locate medium brown antiquing gel, you can create it on your own and it can be custom-tinted to suit your needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a layer of newspaper across your table in order to protect the surface. Arrange your supplies on your work surface.

    • 2

Pour about 3/4 cup glaze into your disposable mixing bowl. Then pour about 1/4 cup paint on top.

    • 3

Stir together the paint and the glaze until they are completely mixed. Test the antiquing gel by brushing it onto a spare piece of wood or an inconspicuous area of the item to be antiqued.

    • 4

Wipe the gel away from the tested area using a cloth, allowing the gel to remain inside the cracks and crevices. Allow the gel to dry for one hour. Then observe the results.

    • 5

Add more brown paint to the homemade antiquing gel if more color is desired. If less color is desired, add more glaze to the mixture. Use the antiquing gel as directed in the instructions of the particular craft or project you are completing.
