How to Change Bath Surround Colors

The bath surround is the wall area around the tub, which generally consists of three joined walls covered with some kind of waterproof material. If the walls are covered with a one-piece fiberglass surround, then changing the look is a simple matter of pulling out the surround and replacing it. If the surround is of tile, you can change the color yourself by painting it. Painting tile requires special preparation and sealing to make the paint stick. Don't do this if your bath has an attached shower, as direct water will eventually pull off the paint.

Things You'll Need

  • Power belt sander (with aluminum oxide sanding belt)
  • Paintbrush
  • Sealing primer (oil based)
  • Paint (oil based)
  • Polyurethane (oil based)
  • Extra-fine standard sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Dull the existing tiles of the bath surround using your belt sander with aluminum oxide sanding belt over each of the tiles. Sand only the tile surfaces, not the grout between them.

    • 2

Brush primer over each tile using a paintbrush, applying it in a thin, even layer. Keep the brush strokes in one direction. Don't prime the grout lines, just the tile surface.

    • 3

      Let it set 24 hours.

    • 4

Apply your paint onto the tiles in the same manner as the primer, keeping it thin and flat. Again, don't paint the grout lines, but just the tile surface. Let it dry 24 hours.

    • 5

Add a second coat of paint to the tiles, then a third, keeping each coat flat and even. Keep the brushstrokes going in one direction. Repeat for three or more layers total, as much as you need for full coverage, letting each coat dry for 24 hours before brushing on the next coat.

    • 6

Brush on a coat of oil-based polyurethane gloss in the same way as you did the paint, using a thin, flat layer. Let it set 24 hours.

    • 7

Sand the polyurethane very lightly, by hand, with extra-fine sandpaper to dull the shine. Brush on a second coat of polyurethane. Let it dry, sand it, and add a third layer. Let it dry for 24 hours.
