How to Remove Sand-Textured Paint on Walls

Textured paint is popular in many homes, but the look may not suit your home's interior design. Whether you purchased a home with the paint applied, or applied the finish and are unhappy with the results, removing the texture can be difficult. Prepare for plenty of elbow grease and several days to remove the texture. If the sand texture is extremely stubborn, consider covering it with a spray-on or hand-troweled plaster.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the room for dust and debris. All items must be removed from the room, including furniture, curtains and home decor items. Protect the room's flooring by stretching plastic tarps or drop cloths on the floor.

    • 2

Place medium-grit sandpaper into a hand or palm sander. Cover your mouth with a dust mask and protect your eyes with safety goggles.

    • 3

Begin to slowly sand away the sand particles. Some paint's texture may immediately loosen and come off the wall, while others may take additional time sanding before the texture grinds away.

    • 4

Change the sandpaper frequently. You may need several packages of the paper.

    • 5

Wipe down the walls once or twice with a damp, clean sponge. This removes all sanding dust and particles and ensures paint will adhere to the wall surface. Paint the walls as desired.
