How to Apply a Satin Chrome Finish

A satin chrome finish can restore the beauty in any number of items, including home lighting, appliances or car parts. In addition, it is a much cheaper option than purchasing a brand new item. Instead, if you carefully apply the satin chrome finish you can restore the item to like-new condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply an alkaline-based cleaner to the object that you are finishing. Use a wipe and the cleaner to rub down the item in order to remove fingerprints, smudges, mold and dirt.

    • 2

Apply an etchant to oxide the item. Dip the item in the etchant for several minutes. It oxides the resin and prepares your item for application of a new coating.

    • 3

Apply an activator (also known as a catalyst) of a precious metal such as gold, silver or palladium. These will form the base for your chrome finish.

    • 4

Apply an accelerator of bright acid copper. Build a thickness of between 0.0005 to 0.001 inches of bright copper to maintain electrical conductivity. Plate the satin on top of the copper base.

Place a layer of electrolytic chromium on top of the satin plate. Be cautious of health hazards by protecting your mouth, nose and hands. Always wear protective goggles when handling such a solution.
