How to Paint a Lace Effect on a Dresser

To give your old dresser new life in just an hour, all you need is a lacy faux finish. This process can be done by someone with very little artistic and decorating skill: there's no need to strip off old paint, and stencils do all of the design work. The supplies you'll need can be bought at most department stores or home improvement stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Removable spray adhesive
  • Package of paper doilies

Instructions

    • 1

Spray one side of a paper doily with the adhesive spray. Make sure to evenly cover the entire side.

    • 2

Press the side of the doily that is covered in adhesive onto the dresser, and smooth it down with your hands. If the doily isn't smooth, peel it off and try again.

    • 3

Continue to apply doilies to the dresser, arranging them in a line across the sides of the dresser. When you get to an edge of the dresser, simply fold the doily around the edge onto the other side and continue placing the doilies. Cut the last row of doilies so the edges meet, but don't overlap.

    • 4

Hold the spray paint can six inches from the surface of the dresser, and spray the entire dresser using sweeping, continuous strokes. Don't spray any area for more than a second or two, to avoid having the paint drip.

    • 5

      Let the paint dry.

    • 6

Peel off the doilies. You will have a lacy design effect now on your dresser.
